Samples for Plant Identification

Type of sample:       Weeds, Small Plants      or      Trees or Shrubs
Weeds, or Small Plants growing in the landscape, woods or crop fields
  1. If possible, dig the plant and place the roots and attached soil in a plastic bag. Wrap stems and leaves in newspaper or tin foil and pack tightly in a box so the plant won't be crushed in transit. Including the roots will not only aid in identification but it will keep the plant fresh so that leaves do not wilt or dry before identification. If the plant can not be dug, include as much of the plant as possible, including the stems, leaves and flowers or seed pods. For large samples, roll in a loose ball, wrapped in newspaper and ship in a strong box, or bring the plant to the Clinic. Ship overnight, or so that it arrives before Friday to avoid wilting over the weekend. Please do not put the leaves and stems in plastic - they will rot!

    • Site where plants are growing (e.g. corn field, yard, sod farm, woods, etc)
