| Insect Spotlight: Emerald Ash Borer | |
Watch out for the emerald ash borer!! This ½" long iridescent green beetle is a relatively new pest in the United States. It was discovered in the Detroit, Michigan area and has since been found in several northwestern counties in Ohio. Last week, it was found in Delaware County, Ohio where it is believed to have been in ash trees in a housing development for 5 years. Why be concerned about this pretty pest? The larvae will kill any species of ash tree in 3 years! They attack young, old, sick and healthy ash trees and to date, no insecticide will effectively kill the larvae before they kill the tree! Watch out and call the EAB Hotline - 888-OHIO-EAB or your local OSU Extension Office if you see the adult or larvae under the bark of an ash tree.
