If a problem is suspected, send a sample from the
declining area to the Plant and Pest Clinic as soon
as the symptoms begin (if possible) along with a
letter describing the symptoms and the history of the
site. The history should include a watering regimen,
and any fertilizer and pesticide/fungicide regimen.
The more information provided to us, the more complete
the reply.
- Dig a sample of 6 inches square and 3-4 inches deep including the
roots and attached soils.
- The sample should include both dying (or dead) turf and healthy
turf which has not been affected.
- Diagnosticians will examine the most recently infected turf, as
pathogens progress from dying to healthy turf.
- If a culture of the disease is necessary, the pathogen must be
isolated from the sample and "grown" in the lab.
- Wrap the sample with newspaper or tin foil, do NOT use plastic,
and do NOT add water.
- Place the sample in a box and add packing material so that the sample
is not broken up during shipment.
- If possible, PLEASE include photos of the turf area where the
samples were taken from.
- Place the letter, and photos in a ziplock baggie to keep them dry.
- The CWEPPDC will charge a fee for its
diagnostic services. Expect to receive a bill if payment is not included
with the sample (checks can be made payable to The Ohio State University).
- Print and fill out a turf form
- Send the samples to the following address
overnight or as soon as possible, as turf decomposes quickly.
