Collecting & Sending Samples

Turfgrass
Cut a square of turf at least 6" x 6" x 2" from the margin of the diseased area so that healthy and diseased turf is included. Golf courses can send samples collected with a cup cutter. An intact layer of soil should be included and will help maintain the sample during shipping. The sample should be collected before fungicides are applied and should not be watered.

Nematodes
Most nematodes are detected through soil samples which should be taken from May to October when soil temperatuers are at least 50 F, at a six inch depth. Do not sample very wet or dry soils. Using a 1" soil sampling tube, trowel or shovel take at least 20 samples at a six inch depth from each sampling area. Mix the samples in a bucket and place one quart of soil in a plastic bag. Keep sample cool.
